(ages 5-8, no prior violin experience)
The perfect introduction to violin, students will get to know the instrument, learn the basic techniques and even play a few short pieces in just five days. For students who think they might be interested in violin this camp will help them decide. Starting with a group camp experience takes all the fear of not knowing how to play the instrument away and replaces it with a fast start supported by peers who are all striving for the same goal. Each three hour day will be broken down into classes on basic techniques, playing on bells and drums, singing and movement, musicianship games, and listening time.
Faculty:
John Beard received a BM in performance from Indiana University, a MM at the University of Maine, and completed further doctoral work in viola, theory and conducting at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. His major teachers include William Primrose, David Dawson, Robert Gerle, and Vidor Nagy. Mr. Beard has served as an Adjunct Instructor in Upper Strings Orchestra at the University of Wisconsin Marathon County, has been a Minnesota Artist-in Residence for the St. Francis Music Center, and a teacher and coach for the D.C. Youth Orchestra Program.
Andrew Noble has played string instruments, including Violin, Viola, Guitar and Mandolin, for over fifteen years, and has earned a Bachelors Degree in Viola Performance from Eastern Kentucky University and a Masters Degree in Music Theory from the University of Texas at Austin. He performs with Austin bands Infinite Partials and Death is not a joyride. In 2008 he was voted the sixth best string player in the Austin Chronicle Music Awards. He keeps a full teaching studio of violinists and violists in order to pass on the great tradition of string playing. When he is not playing, or teaching, he is probably eating something he cooked or enjoying a great film, especially if it has a great score.
