Laura Wascom
Master of Music, Piano Performance
Laura Wascom is a native of San Francisco, California relocated to Austin, Texas in 2006. Trained originally as a concert pianist, Laura holds degrees and certifications from Indiana State University and Louisiana State University. An active educator, she currently serves on the piano faculty of the Orpheus Academy of Music and maintains a small, private piano studio in the SOCO district of Austin in addition to being part of the music staff at the Congress Avenue Baptist Church.
Laura has helped students develop from elementary school beginners into exceptional young adult pianists. As a professional composer, she emphasizes each student finding his or her own creative voice and musical gift. Laura is an active recording studio and touring musician having performed throughout the United States as well as Japan, Nepal, Tibet, India, Uganda, Kenya, and the Netherlands, in addition to having previously served on the piano faculties of Indiana State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, the Austin Lyric Opera, and as a teaching assistant at the Brevard Music Center.
One of the greatest privileges Laura has enjoyed while in Austin is being able to work with students involved in the arts in middle school. 2008-2009 included the composition of an original Christmas musical, The Reason, as well as directing a production of the Lion King, all targeted for the middle school aged child. In 2010, Laura co-founded Jireh Performance Studios, a multi-faceted studio that creates an opportunity for community and rejuvenation through fitness, spiritual health, and artistic development.
