John Sessions

Master of Music, Composition (Piano) 

A native Texan, John Philip Sessions has been an active composer, pianist, pedagogue, and performer since 2010, when he began his studies at Texas State University. His studies consisting of piano lessons with Dr. Washington Garcia, and composition lessons with Russell Riepe. John holds a B.M. in Piano Performance, and a M.M. with a concentration in composition from Texas State University in San Marcos. While a student, Sessions studied counter-point and orchestration with Charles Ditto, electronic music with Richard Hall, and his primary composition teachers were Dr. Michael Ippolito, Dr. Thomas Clark, and Dr. Russell Riepe.

Over the past decade John has actively participated in numerous master classes (both in piano and composition), workshops, and private composition lessons with guest composers, most notably Joel Hoffman and Carter Pann. John has had his music read by the Yarn/Wire Percussion Ensemble, the Attacca Quartet, the Texas State Chorale and Texas State Wind Symphony, as well as numerous small chamber collaborations. An avid accompanist, John has been the acting pianist for numerous large ensembles since 2011, including the Texas State Wind Symphony, Symphonic Winds, Concert Band and the Texas State String Orchestra. In the Fall of 2016, he represented Texas State University by performing with the Texas State Mysterium for New Music Ensemble at the 2016 College Music Society national conference. He has served as an administrator at the Texas State International Piano Festival, has been the Vice President of the Gamelan Lipi Awan of Texas State, currently assists with the CATS Music Theory Tutoring initiative, and was made an honorary inductee of Kappa Kappa Psi in 2016. His solo piano compositions have won two consecutive student composition competitions, in 2011 and 2012. John has operated a private piano studio since 2011, loves his family, and enjoys fishing with his beagle, Tank. John is a member of ASCAP, SCI and the Golden Key Society. He plans to pursue a doctoral degree in composition in 2017.
