Nicolas Hurt is a guitarist and teacher from Austin, Texas. Raised among musicians and artists, Nicolas began to perform in a rock n’ roll band at the age of 10. His childhood band, Misspent Youth, won the Austin Chronicle Poll award for “Best Kid Band” three times. In high school he became a serious student of the classical guitar, studying with Klondike Steadman and Kim Perlak. In 2006 Nicolas was admitted to the University of Texas at Austin studying with professor Adam Holzman. While at UT Nicolas spent his summers working at the National Guitar Workshop in Connecticut where he completed the teacher certification program. Nicolas also completed the teacher training program at Orpheus Academy of Music and joined the faculty.
In his final year at UT his rock band, Speak, signed to Atlantic Records and Nicolas left school and his studio at Orpheus to tour and make records. With Speak, Nicolas performed extensively throughout the United States and Canada. Speak released two records, I Believe In Everything, 2011 Atlantic Records/Modern Art Records and Pedals, 2013 with Playing in Traffic Records. Speak won the Austin Chronicle Poll award for “Best New Band” and “Best Indie Band.” In 2015 Nicolas left Speak and began to study with Michael Gratovich at USC while teaching privately in Los Angeles. Nicolas is now back in Austin finishing his degree with professor Adam Holzman. Nicolas strives to create an engaging and ebullient environment for his students through singing and duet playing. Though devoted to developing solid technique, Nicolas also encourages songwriting, improvisation and the performance of (good) popular music.
