Camp #3:  July 23-27    Camp #4: August 13-17

All World Music Camps are 9-noon

Children will be divided into separate groups by age and ability, with collaborative performance experiences at the end of each day.

Each hour will focus on one of three very different musical experiences:

Choir

Students will learn to sing music from around the world in harmony. Appropriate vocal technique for children, in tune singing, listening skills and aural development will all receive a big boost from this class.

Summer Camp for Music Austin TXWorld Music

Explore a world of different instruments, notes, and rhythms. Students will have fun while gaining an appreciation for non-western rhythm and tonality by participating in music-making and listening to world music demonstrations. Every year we will explore different countries, learning about their unique musical language.

Musicianship

We will use fun games and songs to explore the beat inside us, the relationships between pitches and the function of harmony. Having the kids every day will allow us to go deeper and more securely into musical challenges while keeping things fun and highly active.

Friday Concert

There will be a concert at the end of the week for all parents and friends.

World Music Faculty:

Kim Kittari received her doctorate in ethnomusicology from UT Austin, specializing in Latin American and North American popular musics. She’s currently an Assistant Lecturer at Texas A&M University, where she teaches courses on world, classical, and popular music. She also teaches piano lessons and directs a local choir. Kim has been working with the Orpheus Summer Camp program since 2008, and loves to share her enthusiasm for the music of world cultures with the students.

Skye C. McManus teaches piano, voice, musicianship, and choir at the Orpheus Academy of Music, integrating the principles of the Kodaly methodology.  An Indiana native, she received a BME and Certificate in Piano Pedagogy from Indiana State University, a MM in voice performance at Loyola University New Orleans, a Texas Teacher’s License for EC-12th grade music, and Kodaly Certification at Texas State University. Before moving to Austin, she taught voice and piano lessons in San Antonio in the Judson and Northeast school districts for two years, as well as teaching elementary music. In addition to teaching at Orpheus, she teaches elementary music at The Magellan International School.  When not teaching, Skye enjoys singing opera and studying voice lessons with Ms. Juli Wood, as well as spending time with her husband Scott.

Andrew Noble has played string instruments, including Violin, Viola, Guitar and Mandolin, for over fifteen years, and has earned a Bachelors Degree in Viola Performance from Eastern Kentucky University and a Masters Degree in Music Theory from the University of Texas at Austin. He performs with Austin bands Infinite Partials and Death is not a joyride. In 2008 he was voted the sixth best string player in the Austin Chronicle Music Awards. He keeps a full teaching studio of violinists and violists in order to pass on the great tradition of string playing. When he is not playing, or teaching, he is probably eating something he cooked or enjoying a great film, especially if it has a great score.
